Creativity tip no.756 -Sometimes you have to wear stupid hats

The more serious the song the more stupid me and Turlough become. Bill and Ted. Stupid hats are good during breaks…we drank the last of the Cuban coffee and this is what happened. He took the song “A fire to scare the sun” I had written on piano and added some awesome flavour to it. We finished the song he wrote the piano part for last week. It sounds deadly. I have a million ideas floating around my head for beats and loops underneath…we will see.

I played him some new ones on guitar and he liked them and suggested some good reversals of chord progressions and so on. It was nice to get an outside opinion on them.

Mary Barnecutt my long suffering cellist and road warrior won the National Oxfam poetry competition today. Fair fucks…she is damn talented with the ould words…

  1. Bro,
This is what MUST happen… you must have a really deep dark and brooding album full of moody piano and heartbreaking cello. We are talking nick cave on crack and sedatives. THEN… people send away for your personalised “artography” that sums up the depth of your musical pain. It costs 50 euros. And they get that pic of you and Tully express posted to them.

  2. Your songs are beautiful and I am looking forward to hear the new album, but the paintings…. they are frightening me in a way.
Yes, there is sadness in your songs, so I wouldn’t expect cheerful paintings from you, but…..why so many ‘deadly’ things in the paintings? Or, I just don’t understand the message? :-S

When will you finish the new album? Are you playing in the meantime somewhere in Dublin?

  3. mmm i don;t know why, these are just the images at the moment. Images are a lot different to songs. Songs belong to the listener as well as the musician. Literal images are more direct in some cases and less open to the viewers feeling when viewing. By deadly i think you mean the images of violence or death in the form of skeletons, skulls etc.
The images of death are characters, the symbols are more like Samhain in Ireland or the skulls in Mexican Day of the Dead. Where death is nothing to be feared. The violence in the paintings is different. I grew up in a violent culture and those things are part of my visual language for better or for worse. Paintings change, I doubt i will be painting the same type next year. THe animations I’m working on now are like a bridge between the two. I think you will find more beauty in them. It is very hard to explain.

  4. Yes, I noticed in your songs that you must have had contact with violent situations. I was lucky enough to live far enough to not to experience it.

Just to emphasize; I didn’t want to say that the paintings are ugly…not at all. I would say that they are strong. I am not an artist…..I am looking at them from a layman’s point of view. I know that they made impression and stopped me to watch them. I just was wondering why so much death….
Actually, they reminded me on my ‘relationship’ with Munch. I had the same reaction when I saw these paintings and the Scream. I was kind of ‘scared’, but came back several times to watch the painting to figure out what it really represents and what is the message there. Unfortunately, I couldn’t ask him :) . Nevertheless, he is one of painters I just adore.

  5. Munch is amazing. I have just put some old animations of seven years ago with some songs from the album that seemed to fit. They are dark and violent. And the animations i am working on now are the opposite Everything is a marker of where you are at a particular time i suppose. Every persons reaction is valid to a piece of music or art or writing or even food. From love to repulsion to apathy. There is no right and that is great, it’s one of the nicer things about humans. Individual perception. Thats why I love kids. They either like something or don’t and they don’t care what anyone thinks.

  6. I cannot agree more.
    And even if I didn’t agree…. :) .
